Strawberry Picking

I know I had you thinking about Christmas (in July!) with my last post, but the summer heat keeps reminding me that it's still, well, summer!  Last week we took my nephews to pick strawberries at Gizdich Ranch in Watsonville - one of my favorite summer traditions!  It is nearing the end of the picking season here, and the fields were full of the ripe, red berries, so it wasn't difficult to fill more buckets than we could carry.

When my kids were young, I used to dress them in old, red t-shirts so the strawberry juice they dribbled down their chins from snacking didn't leave a lasting impression.  Like the kids, it's impossible for me to resist tasting a few of the freshly picked ones, still a little dusty from the field and warm from the sun.

With so many ripe berries, it's a fun challenge to find ways to eat and preserve them before they spoil.  My dad makes the best jam, but this year my jam attempt ended in a happy accident we are calling "strawberry syrup," which is just as delicious!  We have been so pleasantly surprised by all the ways this syrup can be used that I might just make the same "mistake" next summer!  If you want to try this at home, just boil your washed, diced strawberries in a heavy pot, add just enough sugar to sweeten them to taste, and the juice of one lemon.  I ended up with syrup instead of jam by adding the sugar BEFORE the pectin (not being able to read the recipe because I was not wearing my glasses might've been the problem).  Next time I might just leave the pectin out, since syrup doesn't need to be thick like jam, and maybe add some vanilla...

Packaged up in pretty bottles I found at The Container Store, the syrup will make great gifts!  You can pair it with crepes, pancakes, waffles or french toast sticks (perfect for dipping!), drizzle it on ice cream or panna cotta, coat the inside of a glass and add piña colada mix to it for a Hawaiian lava flow, or stir into fresh-squeezed lemonade...

Another one of our creations is strawberry bruschetta...

Recipe:

1 cup washed, diced strawberries
1 tsp honey balsamic vinegar  (try this one from Amazon)
brie, camembert or goat cheese
French baguette slices
basil leaves
olive oil
fresh ground pepper
pinch of sea salt

Toss the strawberries, sea salt and honey balsamic together in a bowl.  Brush the baguette slices with olive oil and toast under the broiler.  Spread cheese on baguette slices, spoon strawberries onto cheese, and top with fresh ground pepper and basil leaves. 😋

My daughter's favorite way to eat strawberries is dipped in chocolate!

I hope you find many ways to enjoy the bounty of the season!    xo...k.

Our "Forever" Home

Almost four years ago my husband and I found the most magical piece of California coastal property, and began the painstakingly long and tedious process of building our "forever home."  With the blessing of the California Coastal Commission, the Commercial Agricultural Commission, the Santa Cruz County planning department, and, most importantly, our soon-to-be neighbors, we broke ground.  We are still many months away from moving in, but already it feels like home. I will keep you updated on the progress as we begin my favorite part of selecting the finishing details!

Summer's Over...

Back to School... It's that time of year again, when backpacks, lunch boxes and school supplies replace the patio furniture and pool toys at Target.  With school-aged kids back in class, the days quickly return to a familiar routine...  homework, after-school practices, and regular bedtimes.  But for those of us with college-aged "kids," it's the end of an era and the beginning of a new and unfamiliar "normal."  We've packed up boxes and loaded up cars and U-hauls, only to return home to empty nests.  Sure, there's less laundry and grocery shopping - the package of Oreos doesn't disappear overnight - the house stays clean, and we can go back to watching whatever we want on TV.  But as I wander through the tidy rooms, I am met with a quietness that makes me long for those messy, noisy days of summer and childhood.  My "kids" (now 19 and almost 22) are back at college and sharing an apartment halfway between both of their campuses, so I...

Gift Experiences

I know it's only the end of July, but I am already thinking about Christmas.  It can be overwhelming to wait until the last minute, although with stores putting out holiday decorations earlier and earlier every year, there really isn't any excuse to procrastinate.  As I begin to brainstorm ideas, I thought I'd share one of my favorite kind of gifts to give family and friends: an experience.  With the fast pace of life these days, giving someone the gift of time spent together seems both thoughtful and priceless, plus, you get to share in the fun! This past mother's day, I gave my mom a watercolor painting class at Annie Glass in Watsonville, not far from where we are building our new home.  Often these gifts of experiences end up being an extended day or evening spent as we add on lunch, dinner, and other activities.  For the watercolor class, my son, Max - freshly home from his study-abroad year in Sweden - joined us, and we turned it into a fun-filled day b...
